Oh What a Can Can Do

Need a reminder why recycling rocks? Here's one -- energy savings.

Recycling recovers resources, like alumina in the case of aluminum, and saves energy by avoiding the mining, hauling, and refining of new resources. Check out these stats on recycling a simple aluminum can from the Aluminum Association

• Recycling aluminum saves more than 90 percent of the energy that would be needed to create a comparable amount aluminum from raw materials.

• Tossing away an aluminum can wastes as much energy as pouring out half of that can’s volume of gasoline

• The energy saved by recycling 100 percent of aluminum cans could power 4 million homes for a full year.

tidbit: The aluminum from a can recycled today can be back on store shelves in as little as 90 days.

Once is never enough for our resources. Put them back to work by recycling.
